Virtual Roundtable on "Reusability 2.0: At the Intersection of Learning and ECM"
| |
| Moderator: | Bryan Chapman, Chief Learning Strategist, Chapman Alliance (Brandon Hall Research Associate) |
| Date: | July 16, 2008 |
What is it about?
During this live event, industry guru Bryan Chapman and Xyleme CEO Mark Hellinger discussed with the roundtable participants the challenges of integrating learning and enterprise content management. Listen to the recordings for each Q&A (in MP3) and see the slides used (in PDF) below.
 | Q1: “On the Stages of Progression slide, I’m not seeing ECM. Are you thinking of that as Stage 4?” |
| | Listen to the recorded discussion | | Get the slides presented |
 | Q2: “Bryan, it is a great idea to share learning content and linking it to procedures, however, how do you protect yourself from the risk of too much information being shared?” |
| | Listen to the recorded discussion | | Get the slides presented |
 | Q3: “We are at the point where we are starting to put our enterprise content training together. We are building our training modules using an LMS to house and distribute the content. We are currently at Stage 3 in that most of it is just restricted to learning right now, so how do you move from Stage 3 to Stages 4 & 5?” |
| | Listen to the recorded discussion | | Get the slides presented |
 | Q4: “Can’t you use a Documentum-like tool and restrict access? The tool allows it so some content can be open to all, some to designers, some to learners and facilitators etc.” |
| | Listen to the recorded discussion | | Get the slides presented |
 | Q5: “How do Stages 4 & 5 help politically with connecting the training dept to the rest of the enterprise (seat at the table issues)?” |
| | Listen to the recorded discussion | | Get the slides presented |
 | Q6: “Bryan, can you please comment on how you think defining an information or content taxonomy fits in your Stages?” (The answer expands into social media content) |
| | Listen to the recorded discussion | | Get the slides presented |
 | Q7: “How do you integrate knowledge acquisition while still being able to capture results in an LMS (e.g. RLOs from an LCMS being delivered in a CMS)?" |
| | Listen to the recorded discussion | | Get the slides presented |
 | Q8: “Is the trend still towards the storage of information in XML format to facilitate reuse in other manners?” |
| | Listen to the recorded discussion | | Get the slides presented |
 | Q9: “Are you seeing any/much use of products that are DITA compliant? Do you think DITA has any impact on the format of training content?” |
| | Listen to the recorded discussion | | Get the slides presented |
 | Q10: “XML is more difficult to update by the SME’s. Are you thinking of using MS Office products to update the content and then have a ‘gatekeeper’ group create the XML?" |
| | Listen to the recorded discussion | | Get the slides presented |
 | Q11: “If you link a Documentum-like tool with an assessment engine (low cost CMS for example), the two combined can make an inexpensive LCMS solution in an environment that won’t spring for a big buck LCMS, right?” |
| | Listen to the recorded discussion | | Get the slides presented |
 | Q12: “Where might we find actual examples of implementation of this process and/or places to do site visits?” |
| | Listen to the recorded discussion | | Get the slides presented |
 | Q13: “I haven’t seen content stored in XML. I am seeing content stored in a database and then using XML for transport. XML is a very slow way to store large amounts of content, plus there are security issues.” |
| | Recorded discussion available soon | | Get the slides presented |
 | Q14: “Do you know if anyone is reusing content from external sources, i.e. forklift vendors, companies focused on doing forklift training?” |
| | Recorded discussion available soon | | Get the slides presented |
 | Q15: “Have you seen clients use a webhelp system to get to Stage 4 or 5?” |
| | Listen to the recorded discussion | | Get the slides presented |
