From Theory to Reality: SDSU Leverages Xyleme LCMS for Reusable XML Learning Objects Research

Xyleme announces its collaboration with the Educational Technology Department at San Diego State University (SDSU) to analyze the impact of new XML technologies on the concept of learning object reusability. The project at SDSU will explore the promise of XML to enable true learning object reuse across multiple delivery formats and within multiple audience contexts.

“Xyleme’s approach to reusability is deeply rooted in practical instructional design experiences, and we anticipate that leveraging Xyleme LCMS may at long last bring some level of fulfillment to the long-standing “dream” for a practical system of reusability.”

Associate Professor of Educational Technology at SDSU

The Cost of Creating Learning

We recently gathered some data for creating blended learning. What we found is that the cost of translating a message to another medium takes as much time as creating the message in the first place.

Instructor-led to e-learning (Brandon Hall):

  • It takes 34 development hours to create 1 hour of instructor-led training.
  • It takes 33 hours to simply convert the PowerPoint slides from this ILT into e-learning.
E-learning to mobile (Brandon Hall & eLearning Guild):
  • It takes 220 development hours to create 1 hour of e-learning.
  • The biggest barrier to mobile learning is that this e-learning cannot be easily transferred to a mobile format.

Xyleme Feature Highlight: Storyboard

Xyleme LCMS instructional design templates now include production note elements that can be used to describe the rich media to be utilized in a course.

Using the storyboard output format, Web courses can be previewed at each phase of course design reflecting up-to-date progress. This includes placeholders for media not yet developed with links to the respective production notes. These production notes can be output as scripts for media developers and/or exported to Excel for project management.
