Over at Weblogg-ed, Will Richardson looks at the differences he’s noticed between reading online and reading on paper. This section especially jumped out at me:

… For some reason, probably because I was a former English teacher, I reflect on this whole reading is changing discussion a lot. Probably 75% of what I read I read online. The other 25% is almost all books. I read all of my news from papers, magazines, etc. online, all of my correspondence, all of the blogs that I follow. And, as I’ve written before, my reading habits have changed a great deal. It has become an effort for me to work with longer texts, to do sustained reading and thinking, to stick with complex narratives. …

The people who work for your organization know things that are important to the smooth working of your organization. That’s why they’re working there in the first place.

If you’ve found yourself here, you’re probably concerned with getting what they know, what you want them to be able to share with their colleagues, written and stored for easier access throughout the enterprise. Knowledge, as they say, is one of the few commodities that increases when shared.

Of course, you’ve also got to make sure that their time is spent wisely. Some organizations decide that accepting subject matter expert-generated training content in a Microsoft Word document is therefore the easiest thing to do. While the learning curve seems attractively low, there are hidden costs to the easy road.

What’s your to-learn list? That’s the question at Learning Circuits this month, where bloggers are asked to come up with their own lists to share. But first, a story:

A monk asked Zhao Zhou to teach him.
Zhao Zhou asked, “Have you eaten your meal?”
The monk replied, “Yes, I have.”
“Then go wash your bowl,” said Zhao Zhou.
At that moment, the monk was enlightened.

I first read that story in a book where the way it was told, the monk was asking specifically to be taught something about self cultivation. That’s more or less Zen for self improvement.
