Four Reasons you need structure for informal learning

Wrong Way Last month, I moderated an educational webinar on mobile learning and I was fortunate enough to get some of the leading experts in the field, Judy Brown, Tyson Greer and Allison Rossett, to participate in an online panel discussion to discuss a broad range of topics around mLearning and mSupport.

Normally, our webinars are formal, tightly scripted and tightly controlled events that are planned out to the smallest detail; and I take great pride in the overwhelmingly positive feedback we always get. But as we all know, learning is evolving. Today, we keep hearing that formal presentations are out, that it’s all about informal learning, social learning and user-generated content.

What this webinar taught me is that it’s actually somewhere in between the two.

Four Heads are Better than One: A Chat about Collaborative & Social Learning

I’m going to gloat a little bit. Last week, I had the incredible opportunity to sit down with training industry luminaries Jay Cross, Charles Jennings, Harold Jarche, and Clark Quinn of the Internet Time Alliance or ITA (formerly known as TogetherLearn) to record a podcast on collaborative and social learning in the workplace (if you would like to listen to the podcast, here it is in its 5 parts: part I – managing collaboration, part II – CLO’s and the needs of business, part III – collaborative learning in a corporate setting, part IV – social media in corporations, and part V – integrating learning in the enterprise).

Jay Cross has started a conversation on the Future of Organizational Learning and Development. Great ideas have been shared so far. We are looking forward to the discussion on April 21st!

Michael Hanley analyzing 5 factors that are contributing to the emergence of informal and non-formal learning. Blended learning, Talent management and Learning 2.0 are discussed in the first part whereas Knowledge centers and Learning simulations in the second part of his blog posting.

just published a new 526-page report entitled “Learning Technology Products 2009: Authoring Tools, Learning Management Systems, and Learning Content Management Systems” that contains short one – to three – page profiles of the products featured in three Brandon Hall Research KnowledgeBases: Authoring Tool KnowledgeBase, LMS KnowledgeBase and LCMS KnowledgeBase.

Thinking outside the blocks (yes “blocks,” not box): New ways of learning with shiftables. Now, this is a post Bryan Chapman uploaded in February, but I had to include it. Wow, it is amazing!
